The real content of a message is the intent behind it, and intent is carried by contextual clues more than by the words. When something arrives, what came right before and after, all of it changes what it means.
I keep thinking about one of those LeapFrog pen books. Under the print there is a faint pattern you cannot really see, and that hidden pattern is what lets the pen know exactly where it is on the page. That is the layer I care about reading. The timing and circumstance of a message should not be a flag I have to set. It should just be part of how it is understood.
