I keep coming back to brand as a compass, not a map. A map assumes the terrain holds still long enough to chart it. It doesn’t. The ground moves, the market moves, life is mostly a response to whatever wave is arriving. A map of a landscape that’s already changed is worse than useless, because it’s confidently wrong.
A compass is different. It doesn’t tell you the route. It keeps you oriented while the terrain shifts under you, so you can make the next real decision from where you actually are.
The longer I sit with it, the more it’s one model applied in different realms. Brand is the compass for a company. The same instinct is the compass for a life, or a build. Orientation over cartography.
When the terrain keeps moving, are you still trying to draw the map?
