A sharp new hire with a systems mind asked me to walk her through our process, and the honest answer was that it changes every project. You could argue that means we don’t have one. Fair. I think it’s adaptability.
No two projects have gone the same way, and every one taught us something we couldn’t have known going in. If we’d poured our effort into building the perfect process early, we’d have failed. You don’t know what you don’t know. With something this young, you let the process stay fluid and optimize for fast learning instead.
Only once a structure starts forming around what the business actually is can you turn the learnings into a process. I used to feel guilty about the constant changing. Now I read it as a signal of where we are, not a flaw in how we work. Have grace with the part that looks like disorganization. It’s usually just early.
Are you systematizing because it’s time, or because the mess makes you anxious?
