I spent years running a brand process and once tried to document the whole thing, every step, so it could be taught and repeated. Reading it back, the documentation missed the point entirely. The process was never the value. The value was being present in the conversation and pulling the threads that needed pulling, in real time, for that specific client.
Which is exactly why it never really scaled and always felt awkward to sell. It was built around a personal way of seeing. I was effectively selling my brain, and handing over a logo as the receipt. The deliverable made it look like a design project. It was actually a thinking project wearing a design project’s clothes.
That gap is the thing. When the real value is your judgment in the room, the artifact you hand over will always undersell it, and the price will always feel transactional for what it actually was.
